Technical Notes and Digital Processing

Primary Photography

Digitization of physical objects was performed using a Canon EOS 5D MarkII (21MP full frame CCD) digital camera at fixed aperture (typically f13 or f16) and captured proprietary 21MP RAW images of 5616 x 3744 pixels converted to open-source Adobe digital negative (DNG) format for archiving and processing. Dedicated macro lenses were Canon EF100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM for objects up to 9" in maximum dimension, and Canon EF 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro Autofocus Lens for larger objects. Lens-specific refractive and color corrections were made in Adobe Lightroom.

Lighting conditions varied as follows

    • Reflected light (paper images): dual 4400K daylight 60 watts diffused compact fluorescent snail lamps.
    • Transmitted Light (backlit glass and transparent images): Light emitting diode Halv 5700 6" x 8" daylight lightbox.
    • Hybrid transmitted/Reflected Lighting (Tissue Views): Daylight Fluorescent bulb PortaTrace Box for backlighting with dual 9 watt natural compact fluorescent snail lamps for simultaneous reflected light

Image processing

Was done in Adobe Lightroom and Adobe Photoshop. Separate aligned right and left views and anaglyph processing was done using Masuji Suto and David Sykes freeware software "Stereo Photomaker" which is available online at : [http://stereo.jpn.org/eng/stphmkr/]
